TermDefinition
Federalists favored a strong central government.
John Adams He was the second president of the United States and a Federalist. He was responsible for passing the Alien and Sedition Acts. Prevented all out war with France after the XYZ Affair.
John Marshall A Federalist appointed by President John Adams as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
The Marshall Court Chief Justice John Marshall made many decisions that strengthened the federal government
Thomas Jefferson He ran for president as a Democratic-Republicans in the election of 1800 and was tied with Burr for president.
Aaron Burr He ran for president as a Democratic-Republicans in the election of 1800 and tied with Jefferson. The House of Representatives chose Jefferson. This angered him and he challenged Hamilton to a duel.
Alexander Hamilton He was a Federalist and served as Secretary of Treasury under President Washington.
Democratic-Republicans Is a member of a former political party in the United States that favored a strong state government
Marbury vs. Madison court case The case said that the court could rule a law unconstitutional
Alien and Sedition Acts These laws did not let anyone speak out against the governement
