What was the Great Depression? a severe economic decline that lasted from 1929 to the early 1940s
What is overproduction? Companies overproduce when they produce more product than is being purchased.
How does overproduction affect price? It makes the price go down because there is more product than people wanting the product
What is unemployment? the condition of being out of work
What is the stock market? where people buy and sell stocks
What is credit? borrowed money
What is seen as the start of the Great Depression? The Stock Market Crash of 1929
Who was the US President for the first four years of the Great Depression? Herbert Hoover
How did most Americans feel about President Hoover? They blamed him for the Great Depression
What caused the Dust Bowl? severe drought and soil erosion from poor farming practices
Where was the Dust Bowl? The Midwest US
What was the Dust Bowl? the name given for the area of the Great Plains in the 1930s where drought and damaging farming practices turned topsoil into dust
Who were Okies? Farming families who were forced to abandon their farms in the Midwest and migrate to California in search of work
What new US leader was elected in 1932? President Franklin D. Roosevelt
What was FDR's plan to end the Great Depression called? The New Deal
What was the purpose/ goals of the New Deal? Relief, Recovery, and Reform
FDR communicated his ideas to the American public on the radio each weekly. His broadcasts were known as? Fireside Chats
What was one of the main things that many of FDR's New Deal programs did? provided jobs for the unemployed
What were 2 reasons some people did not like FDR's New Deal? It cost a lot of money, and it increased the power of the government
Did the Great Depression only happen in the United States? No, it was worldwide.
Did the New Deal end the Great Depression? No, it helped, but WWII ended the Great Depresson
