How did Aksum's location, as well as its interactions with other regions, affect its development? They allowed it to act as a hub for caravan and sea travel and trade, furthing allowing it to become prosperous through trade and also allowing it to form connections with many powerful regional entities.
What certain events, as well as setting led to Aksum's becoming Christian? After being educated from a young Christian man from Syria, when Ezana was crowned ruler of Aksum, he had converted to Christianity and established it as the kingdom's official religion,
How did the Muslims' conquests of Africa affect the kingdom of Aksum? Blocking off trade routes, due to both political and spiritual reasons, Islamic invaders had forced Aksum to move their capital, which had inevitably led to Aksum's decline.
Of Aksum's achievements, which has continued into today? Of its achievements, religiously, the establishment of Christianity is the longest lasting achievement of the Aksumites. Today, the land of Ethiopia, where Aksum was located, is home to millions of Christians.
How did the location of Aksum's kingdom help it to become a trade city and, as a result, a world power? Close to many bodies of water, such as the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Nile river, the closely located bodies of water allowed for easy trade both to other lands importing goods in their own region.
What events and conditions caused the Aksum's leaders to move their capital? Due to Islamic invasions, it resulted in trade routes being cut off, political problems, and the need to escape the advancing wave of Islam, Aksum was forced to move their capital.
What had caused the kingdom of Aksum to decline? In part because invasions and as a result, cut off trade routes, the Aksumites had lost connections with other Christian settlements, and as a result, were forced to move their capital, affecting them both politically and spiritually.
What role had the kingdom of Aksum played in international trade? Due to its close proximity of many bodies of water used for trade, both the exporting and importing of goods was very easy, exporting goods such as ivory, tortoise shell, gold and emeralds, and importing silk and spices.
What conditions had sparked the Aksumites to adapt to their environment? Due to both the rough and hilly environment, the Aksumites were forced to creatively adapt.
What had the Aksumites created as a result of their hilly and rough environment? Terraces, or steplike ridges, which were put on mountain slopes, and helped the soil retain water and prevented it from being washed downhill in heavy rains. The Aksumites also dug canals to channel water from mountain streams into the fields.
What cultural achievements had the Aksumites achieved? Ge'ez, the language brought to Askum by Arabs, was the only ancient African kingdom known to have developed a written language, aside from Egypt and Meroƫ. Askum also was the first state south of the Sahara to mint its own coins.
What was Aksum and where was it located? An African kingdom, located in what's now Ethiopia and Eritrea, they reached the height of their power in the fourth century AD.
Who was Ezana? An Aksumite ruler, and a strong one at that, Ezana is responsible for the height of the Aksum kingdom. Demonstrating this by destroying the Kush capital of Meroƫ and taking over the kingdom of Kush around AD 320.
From the beginning, why had the Aksumites had a diverse cultural heritage? Impart because of the Arab people who had crossed the Red Sea, carrying with them their traditions, these Arab people settled among those of the Kushite people.
How had the kingdom of Aksum come to be? In 750, the East African kingdom Kush had gone north and conquered Egypt, where during the century, they entered Egypt and drove the Kushites south. Though, maintaining power for 1,000 years, another kingdom had come and conquered the Kush; Aksum.
Why had the Aksum kingdom last for 800 years? In part because of both its cultural and technological achievements, the achievements enabled Aksum to last for 800 years.
During what years had the kingdom of Aksum reach their height of their kingdom? Between the years Ad 325 amd 360, under the rule of Ezana, Aksum reached its height.
According to legend, what is the connection between Israel's King Solomon and Arabia's Queen of Sheba? Traced back to legend, both King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba are credited for the founding of the kingdom of Aksum and the Ethiopian royal dynasty.
When was the first mention of Aksum? First mentioned in a Greek guidebook, written around AD 100, "Periplus of the Erythraean Sea" describes Zoskales, who is thought to be the first king of Aksum.
Did Aksum's thoughts and practices ever leave the confinements of their region? No, following a pattern found in other cultures, both in Africa and around the world, Aksum's practices had never really expanded outside a pretty small area.
What religion did the invaders of Aksum practice and who was their leader? Practicing Islam, by their leader Muhammad's death in 632, Muhammad's followers had conquered all of Arabia, which included the territory of Aksum on the Arabian coast in the Red Sea.
