glacial erosion
glacial erosion and landscapes all
| mountain glaciers | -develop in high mountainous areas, often flowing out of ice fields, span several peaks sometimes even mountain ranges |
| valley glacier | originate from mountain glaciers, these glaciers spill down into the valleys looking like giant tongues |
| continental glaciers | deposit material as they move |
| crevasses | they form when the glacier is flowing over a rough surface and they crack the brittle ice sheets |
| alpine glacier | mountain glaciers formed by erosion of moving ice |
| striations | parallel groves cut into bed rock by rock fragment stuck at the bottom of the glacier as the glacier passes over |
| truncated spurs | they are ridges that have been shortened or cut off by the moving glacier |
| hanging valleys | are smaller valleys that have been eroded less than the main. valley |
| ribbon lakes | are long, narrow lakes that form in hollows I the main valley |
| erratics | are boulders transported by ice and deposited often in a area with totally different rock |
| u-shaped glacial trough | straight, trench-like, valley with wide, flat floor and steep sides,u- shaped valley is carved out by glacial ice |
| corrie/cirque | deep, rounded hollows with a steep back wall and sides. they are shaped rather like an armchair . may Corries may contain a tarn or a lake |
| tarn | a small lake in between a corrie |
| arète | the land between them gets narrower, due to erosion until a knife like ridge is formed known as a arète |
| pyramidal peak/horn | when three or more Corries cut into the same mountain |
| moraine | like river and seas even glacier has a material it uses to erode continuously this is known as moraine |
| kettle lake | a glacial lake which is formed when buried blocks of glacial ice melt |
| paternoster lake | it is one of a series of glacial lake connected by a single stream or a braided stream system. aka lords prayers |
