dictator | A ruler with total control over the people. Julius Caesar was a dictator. Senators murdered him and this led to the end of the Roman Republic. |
Augustus | The first Roman emperor whose rule began a long period of prosperity and peace called the “Pax Romana,” which means Roman peace. |
gladiator | A Roman athlete; usually a slave, criminal, or prisoner of war who was forced to fight for the entertainment of the public. |
colosseum | A large stadium in Rome where athletic events took place. |
census | A periodic count of all the people living in a region. |
Pompeii | A city in ancient Italy that was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. |
aqueducts | Structures used to carry flowing water from a distance. |
arches | A curved structural member spanning an opening and serving as a support. |
concrete | A building material made from a mixture of crushed stone, sand, cement, and water. |
Latin | The language of ancient Rome. It influences many future languages. |
