What are the five pillars of Islam?(8.1) 5 prayers a day, alms to the poor, Pilgrimage, Profession of Faith, and Fasting during Ramadan.
Why did Muhammad leave Mecca? Because he was neglecting the Arab gods so they threatened him to death.
What happened when Muhammad returned to Mecca? Muhammad and 10,000 of his followers marched to the outskirts of Mecca and surrounded the city. Facing sure defeat the Mecca leaders surrendered.
How did the Kaaba stone become famous? It become famous as a religious stone because during certain holy months, Arabs brought religious pilgrims to worship at an ancient shrine in the city of Kaaba.
What is the holy book for Islam?(8.1) The Qur'an which is similar to the bible.
When Muhammad died, why did the community face a crisis?(8.2) The community faced a crisis because they didn't know how to choose their next leader and Muhammad didn't tell them how to.
What happened after Abu-Bakr became the leader of Islam? Many tribes that used to follow Islam abandoned it and many others refused to pay their taxes and declared themselves prophets.
What were some reasons for Islam successfully expanding? They had a well trained army and the armies they were facing weren't strong and the persecution suffered by people under Byzantine rule.
Why did people dislike the Umayyads family? Because they were leaders for materialism and for wealth instead of the spirituality and religion.
What was one difference between the Sunnis and Shiites?(8.2) The Sunnis believe that any Muslim man that follows Muhammad's rule can be a leader and the Shiites believe that the direct bloodline from Muhammad should be the leader of Islam.
What were some of the Muslim cities?(8.3) The capital of Baghdad, some others were Córdoba, Cairo, Damascus, and Jerusalem.
What were the four social classes for Muslims? The upper class were people born Muslim, then the second class is people that converted to Muslim, the third class is "protected people" and included people from other religions and the fourth class is made up of slaves.
What was the role of women in the Muslim society? The Qur'an believes that all men and women are equal and the Sharia says that most women have rights in marriage and many other things.
What were some reasons to support the advancement of science? The rulers wanted qualified people to help treat the sick. Mostly everyone used math and astronomy to calculate the times for prayer and the direction of Mecca.
What was art like during the times of the Muslim Empire? Muslims learned to adapt Arabic artistic traditions to Islamic beliefs and create wonderful pieces of artwork.
