acupuncture Ancient Chinese medical technique for relieving pain, curing disease, and improving general health..
aristocrat Nobles whose wealth came from land they owned. land and power was passed down from one generation to the next.
bureaucracy a form of government is made up of appointed officials who are responsible for different areas of government.
classical civilization an advanced state of development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences and the use of record keeping.
Confucianism An ancient Chinese belief system that focuses on living a peaceful life.
Dao Concept of Chinese philosophy meaning proper way, path or course.
Dynasty a line of rulers who belong to the same family.
Filial Piety Family members placed the needs and desires of the head of the before their own.
Golden Age A period of peace, prosperity and cultural achievements.
Ideograph A kind of character in Chinese writing that joins two or more pictographs to represents an idea.
Legalism A philosophy was developed by a scholar named Hanfeizi taught people that humans were naturally evil. People needed strict laws and harsh punishments. This is also known as the School of Law.
Mandate of Heaven A heavenly law that gave the Zhou King the power to rule.
Pictograph Characters that stand for objects in Ancient Chinese writing.
Silk Road Trade routes stretching 4,000 miles from western China to southwest Asia.
Social Class Ancient Chinese society had three main social classes; landowning aristocrats at the top, peasants farmers in the middle, merchants at the bottom.
Tyrant A cruel and oppressive ruler.
