| What was the Hijrah? | A journey in 622 where Muhammed decided to leave Mecca. Following a small group of supporters, Muhammad moved to the town of Yathrib. Known as the Hijrah, it marked a turning point for Muhammed as he attracted many loyal followers. |
| Why were Muhammad's new found religious beliefs a cause for conflict in Mecca? | Many Meccans feared that it would neglect Arab gods. |
| Why was Mecca an important city in western Arabia? | It was the center of trade and the site of the Ka'aba. |
| What are the sources of authority for Muslims? | The Sunnah and the Qur'an. |
| In what ways are Muslim teachings comparable to those of Christians and Jews? | They are received in a book they deem holy. However, further, to Muslims, Allah is the same God that is worshiped in Christianity and Judaism, and they trace back their ancestry to Abraham, as the Jews and Christians do as well. |

| What successfully ended the elective system of choosing a caliph? | Ali and his successor got assassinated, and as a result, the Umayyads took over. |
| Why were the "Rightly Guided" caliphs successful in their goal to expand the empire and spread Islam? | The Byzantine and Sassanid Empire had a weak military, which made for easy invasion, and people often welcomed the invaders and their cause and chose to accept Islam. |
| During their rule, what changes did the Umayyads make? | They moved their capital to Damascus, and with their abandonation of the simple way of life demonstrated by previous caliphs further led to the division of the Muslim comunity. |
| How did the Abbasids come to power? | As many people rejected the luxurious life of the Umayyads, many rebel groups attempted to overthrew the Umayyads in 750. In one of these groups being the Abbasids, they overthrew the Umayyads and took control of the empire. |
| What changes did the Abbasids make during their rule? | They developed a bureaucracy to keep track of the huge empire's affairs. To support it, they taxed land, imports and exports, and non Muslims wealth. |
| What was a women's role in Muslim society? | Under the Qur'an, men and women are equal, however, responsibilities of wives depend on the income of the man. Poor women worked in the fields, where wealthy women were eligible for education. However, all women raised their children. |
| What were Muslim contributions to medicine, mathematics, and astronomy? | The creation of algebra. The discovery of the fact that light rays pass from objects to the eyes and not the other way around (as formerly commonly believed). And the investigation in to smallpox and measles. |
| What were the advantage of blending traditions within a culture? | Societies were exposed to a "different" way of life. As a result, different ideas spread throughout culture and produced a new pattern of behavior amongst societies and people. |

Studying the skies faced worshipers towards Mecca so they can pray, as well as guide traders to cities. |
