Scribe A person who writes things for others.
Ziggurats Stepped pyramid shaped temples built by Sumerians to honor their Gods
City-State An independent walled in city in Mesopotamia with a religious temple in the middle, houses on the inside, and farm land on the outside
Irrigation A way of supplying fresh water to an area of farmland.
Tigris and Euphrates rivers: The two rivers that surround Mesopotamia. These rivers would flood and provide silt that made the soil fertile.
Fertile Crescent An arc (crescent) of rich farmland in Southwest Asia, between the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea
Division of Labor the type of arrangement in which each worker specializes in a particular task or job
Sumer The first empire that ruled in Mesopotamia and is credited with inventing writing.
Cuneiform A system of writing developed by the Sumerians around 3,000 BC, using a wedge shaped stylus and clay tablets
Mesopotamia means... "Land Between Two Rivers"
Iraq The present day country where Mesopotamia is located
Gilgamesh A legendary Sumerian king who was the hero of an epic collection of mythic stories
Babylon The largest and most important city in Mesopotamia. Known for its gold and trade.
Hammurabi's Code a set of 282 laws that dealt with almost every part of daily life
King Hammurabi most famous king of Babylon; known for creating the world's first written code of law
Polytheism belief in many gods and goddesses
Agriculture Farming and growing crops
Food Surplus Producing enough food for everyone allows people to do other jobs in a society besides farming
