pardon a removal of the legal consequences of an offense or conviction
scalawag white Southerner who collaborated with northern Republicans during Reconstruction, often for personal profit. Derisive
fraud wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain
lien a right to keep property belonging to another person until a debt is owed by that person is paid
sympathizer a person who agrees with or supports an opinion
confiscated take (someone's property) with authority
supremacy the state of being superior to all others in authority, power, or status
occupation the state of being occupied by military force
segregation the action or state of setting someone or something apart from other people
insurgency an active revolt or uprising
