Health Care System (Health Science)
| Term | Definition |

| Long-Term Care Facilities (LTCs and LTCFs) | mainly provide assistance and care for elderly patients, usually called residents |
| Independent Living/ Assisted Living | allow individuals who can care for themselves to rent or purchase an apartment in a facility that provides meals, housekeeping, and basic health care |
| Medical Offices | they vary from offices that are privately owned by one doctor to large complexes that operate as corporations and employ many doctors and other health care professionals |
| Dental Offices | privately owned by one or more dentist or dental clinics that employ a group of dentists |
| Clinics (Satellite Clinics) | health care facilities that are sometimes composed of groups of medical and dental doctors who share a facility and other personnel |
| Laboratories | perform special diagnostic tests such as blood and urine test |
| Home Health Care | Designed to provide care in the patients home, usually used by disabled or elderly |
| Hospice | Provided by agencies for terminally ill persons with 6 months or less to live |
| Mental Health Facilities | Treat patients with mental disorders and diseases |
| Genetic Counseling Centers | Work with couples or individuals who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant to see if the child will have genetic issues |
| Rehabilitation | Provide care to patients with physical or mental disabilities obtain maximum self-care function |
| Health Maintenance Organization (HMOs) | Both health care delivery systems and types of health insurance |
| Industrial Health Care Centers | Provide health care for employees of the industry or business by performing basic examination |
| School Health Services | Found in schools or colleges. Can provide services for emergency care and sudden illness |
| World Health Organization (WHO) | Complies stats and information on disease, publishes health, information and investigates serious health problems |
| U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) | Deals with health problems in the United States |
| National Institutes of Health (NIH) | A division of the USDHHS: concerned with causes, spread, and control of diseases in population |
| Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) | Another division of the USDHHS: concerned with causes, spread, and control of diseases in population |
| Food and Drug Administration (FDA) | a federal agency responsible for regulating food and drug products sold to the public |
| Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) | Researches the quality of health care delivery and identify the standards of treatment that should be provided by health care facilities |
| Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) | establishes and enforces standards that protect workers from job related injuries and illnesses |
| Health Department | provide health services as directed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. |
| Voluntary Agencies | Supported by donations, membership fees, fund-raisers, and federal or state grants |
| Health Insurance Plans | pays for cost of health care, most people rely on it |
| Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) | a type of managed health care insurance plan usually provided by large industries or companies to their employees |
| Medigap | health insurance plans that help pay expenses not covered by Medicare |
| Medicaid | a medical assistance program |
| Workers' Compensation | a health insurance plan providing treatment for workers injured on the job |
| TRICARE | a U.S. government health insurance plan for military personnel |
| Managed Care | an approach that has developed in response to rising health care costs |
| Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) | is a federal law that required the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge. |
| Organizational structure | encompasses a line of authority or chain of command |
| Hospitals | institution that provides medical or surgical care and treatment for the sick or injured |
| Laboratories | a room or building where scientific tests, research experiments, or learning takes place |
| Medicare | government program that provides medical care for elderly/disabled individuals |
