| Secession | to break away |
| Emancipation Proclamation | freed all slaves in the south |
| Reconstruction | Era of rebuilding after the Civil War with emphasis on the fair treatment of freedmen (former slaves) |
| Due Process | The right which guarantees the government must treat people fairly according to the law |
| Equal Protection | Government must treat people equally (in comparison to one another) |
| Suffrage | the right to vote |
| Abolish | to get rid of; to end |
| Petition | The ability of citizens to write the government about their concerns |
| Press | The ability of citizens to use the media to express their opinions, even if the opinions are unpopular and controversial |
| Assembly | The ability of citizens to gather together peacefully |
