Constitutional Amendments Vocabulary

Secession to break away
Emancipation Proclamation freed all slaves in the south
Reconstruction Era of rebuilding after the Civil War with emphasis on the fair treatment of freedmen (former slaves)
Due Process The right which guarantees the government must treat people fairly according to the law
Equal Protection Government must treat people equally (in comparison to one another)
Suffrage the right to vote
Abolish to get rid of; to end
Petition The ability of citizens to write the government about their concerns
Press The ability of citizens to use the media to express their opinions, even if the opinions are unpopular and controversial
Assembly The ability of citizens to gather together peacefully
