| Patriarch | a principle bishop in the eastern branch of christianity |
| Excommunication | the taking away of a persons right of membership in a christian church |
| Schism | a split or division between strongly opposing sides cause by different opinions |
| Eastern Orthodox Church | in the east, led by a patriarch (greek ideas) |
| Caliph | a supreme political and religious ruler in a Muslim government |
| Sunni-Shi'a Split | a disagreement between two branches of Islam over who should be the rightful leader and prophet |
| Abbasids | a dynasty that ruled much of the Muslim empire from 750-1258 |
| Urban Center | cultural and power centers in cities which symbolized the strength of the dynasty |
| House of Wisdom | a center of learning established in Baghdad |
| Calligraphy | the art of beautiful handwriting |
| Religious Toleration | a recognition of people's right to hold differing religious beliefs |
| Sikhs | members of a non-violent religious group whose beliefs blend elements of buddhism, hinduism, and sufism |
