Era of the Common Man A term used to refer to Andrew Jackson's presidency (1829-1837) because he believed that presidents were representative of the common man
Effects of Jackson's Policies on American Politics -Dismantled the national bank -Strenghtened the central government -Allowed presidents to veto more bills than before
Election of 1824 Results Andrew Jackson won the popular vote, but did not get enough electoral college votes to be elected. The House of Representatives decided that John Quincy Adams was president
Spoils System A system by which the political party that won an election would reward its campaign workers by appointing them to positions of power
Spoils System PROS -Keeps the political party active -Considered a more effective government
Spoils System CONS Appointments are based on the political party's needs.
Kitchen Cabinet A term used to describe Andrew Jackson's unofficial advisors, who the comon people thought did not make good decisions
National Bank Dislike by President Jackson, who thought it was unconstitutional and vetoed the charter because he viewed it as anti-republican and unnessecary
Nullification Crisis In 1828, Jackson passed a protective tarriff that hurt US planters. It angered the southern states, especially South Carolina, which passed the Nullification Act and threatened to secede.
Indian Removal Act Designed to remove the Indians from the South so that it could grow economically. Indians were put on reservations, but some refused, which led to conflict.
