Nirvana | In Buddhism, a state of perfect happiness and peace |
A monk | A person who gives up worldly possessions and pleasures like fine clothes, money, and even shelter |
The Four Noble Truths | Life is full of suffering, People suffer because they desire worldly things and want to satisfy themselves, The only way to stop desiring things, The only way to stop desiring things is to follow the Eightfold Path. |
Buddhism | A religious teaching taught by the Buddha and his followers. The Buddha’s followers believe that Buddha is a great teacher, not a god. |
Hinduism | A religion based on the experiences and wisdom of many wise men and women over the ages. They believe in one supreme god, Brahma |
Siddhartha Gautama | He founded Buddhism. He lived a perfect life because his dad didn’t want him to see the world. (He was a prince) and when he was able to see the world, it pained him and he became a monk. |
Caste System | Brahmin - Priests and Scholars (Highest caste) Kshatriya - Soldiers and warriors Vaishya - Merchants and Professionals Shudra - Laborers Untouchables (Lowest caste) |
The Indus River | The Indus Valley civilization began in the valley around the Indus River. The Indus Valley civilization developed a great river system. The first settlements were built on the shore of the river. There was rich soil so farmers could grow more crops. |
Ashoka | (Chandragupta’s grandson) converted from Hinduism to Buddhism, and he used his power to convince millions of other people to convert to Buddhism also. (His experiences in battle deeply affected him so he turned away from a life of violence). |
