| imperialism | policy by which one nation controls another by obtaining territory or by holding political or economic power |
| nationalism | loyalty and devotion to a nation and national interests are more important than individuals or groups |
| ethnic group | a cultural or national background that a group of people have in common |
| militarism | an approach to foreign policy that embraces the use of military force |
| alliance | a relationship, between two countries or people, when each side receives benefits to defend each other if one of them is attacked |
| Central Powers | began as an alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary, then as WWI began, other nations joined |
| neutrality | when a nation refuses to take sides in a dispute |
| blockade | an act of war, ships, troops, or aircraft may be used to prevent people, supplies, or other materials from leaving or entering an enemy country |
| Zimmerman Telegram | coded message suggested that Mexico form a military alliance with Germany. In return, it promised that United States' land would go to Mexico upon victory |
| draft | US citizens registered to serve in the military and may have been selected via this process |
| liberty bond | certificates sold by US government to citizens to fund WWI, were paid back with interest |
| trench warfare | a type of land-based fighting that began in the U.S. Civil War |
