| Term | Definition |

| Total War | War that involves several different countries and affects each of those countries in every aspect, economically, socially, and the entire population. Also affects the home front as well. |
| Bolshevik | Revolutionary socialist party led by Lenin and Leon Trotsky, they followed the ideas of Karl Marx. Eventually becomes communist party. |
| Triple Alliance | An alliance that was made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy during WWI. |
| Empire | A collection of nations or peoples ruled by a single authority, usually a monarch, but can be systems of government as well. |
| Nationalism | An intense amount of pride in one’s country that people in that country display. |
| .Triple Entente | An alliance that was made up of France, Russia, and Great Britain during WWI |
| Archduke Francis Ferdinand | Heir to the Austria-Hungary thrown. Assassinated by Gavrilo Princip on June 28, 1914. |
| Militarism | The glorification of military power, arose in many nations of Europe. |
| Trench Warfare | Troops dug trenches along the front. Very little ground was gained by either side in this way, and many soldiers were killed. |
| Vladimir Lenin | An exiled Russian revolutionary who helped begin the Russian Revolution, also headed the Bolshevik party. |
| Propaganda | Government imposed print that spread ideas of to promote a cause or to damage an opposing cause. |
| Neutral | A country that stays out of a conflict (not supporting either side). |
| Armistice | Signed on November 11, 1918, it was an agreement to end the fighting of WWI. |
| Reparations | Payments that a country had to make for war damage that they had caused. |
| Joseph Stalin | Began ruling Russia in 1924, ruled through terror and brutality. Launched the “Great Purge”, responsible for millions of deaths. |
| Rasputin | A supposed "holy man" who had influence over the czarina of Russia and used his power for corruption. |
| Treaty of Brest-Litovs | Treaty in which Russia lost substantial territory to the Germans. This ended Russian participation in the war (1918).k |
| Gavrilo Princip | The assassin of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria, a member of the Black Hand |
