What did the early European settlers in the English colonies originally attempt? The early European settlers in the English colonies originally attempted to enslave the local Indigenous peoples.
What did the use of enslaved Native Americans prove? The use of enslaved Native Americans proved unsuccessful for a number of reasons.
What often happened to natives peoples? Native peoples often died when exposed to European diseases.
What did many Native Americans refuse to do? Many Native Americans simply refused to work and would die from starvation or beatings. It was easy for indigenous people to escape.
What were Native Americans able to do? Native Americans were able to survive in the wilderness and there were often nearby native villages that would take them in and shelter them.
What was the need for in many places? There was a need in many places for settlers to form alliances with neighboring tribes.
What did the English colonists soon turn to? The English colonists soon turned to the use of enslaved Africans. This was tied directly to their economies.
What happened with the resulting Atlantic slave trade? The resulting Atlantic slave trade was shaped by the desire for cheap labor as the colonies attempted to produce raw goods for European use.
What was the problem with American crops? Many American crops (including cotton, sugar, and rice) were not grown in Europe, and importing crops and goods from the New World often proved to be more profitable than producing them on the European mainland.
What did they need a lot of to create these plantations? However, a vast amount of labor was needed to create and sustain plantations that would be economically profitable.
Which economy was heavily dependent on the cash crops? The Southern Colonies economy was heavily dependent on those cash crops that were sold to Europe and grown on large plantations.
What was not a surprise in the Southern Colonies? It is not a surprise that the number of enslaved Africans in these colonies far surpassed those in the other two colonial regions.
What is very important to note? It is very important to note that NO northern or middle colony was without its slaves. From Puritan Massachusetts to Quaker Pennsylvania, Africans lived in BONDAGE.
What was New England lacking? lacking large-scale plantations, New England did not have the same level of demand for slave labor as the South. It was more typical to have one or two enslaved people attached to a household, business, or small farm.
What was the shortage in the Middle Colonies? In the Middle Colonies there was a shortage of a white labor supply because land was so cheap and easy to buy.
What happened to farmers and businesspeople in the Middle Colonies? Farmers and businesspeople in the Middle Colonies turned to slaves during the colonial period to meet their desire for economic profit.
What did all three colonies have? However, in all three colonies, slavery existed as a substitute labor system; that is, slavery existed alongside free white labor, which farmers favored over slavery.
Unlike the South, what happened with slavery in the North? Unlike the South, slavery in the North never developed into the predominant economic system, due to the lack of a staple crop.
What happened without a strong economic need for slavery? Without a strong economic need for slavery, the institution's slow decline in the Middle Colonies began by the time of the Revolutionary War.
