SS Quarterly Review

Ziggurat A large temple made of mud-bricks that most city-states had
Polytheism A type of belief that worshiped more than one god
Silt Small particles of soil that was proven excellent for farming
King Narmer King Narmer united Upper and Lower Egypt into one Egyptian empire. He was the king during the Old Kingdom
King Sargon King Sargon conquered city-states and then turned them into an empire
Cuneiform A way of writing written on clay tablets
Irrigation The method of watering crops (Used to grow surpluses)
King Hammurabi King Hammurabi ruled the Babylonians. He created the law code and conquered Mesopotamia
Unification The process of unifying or uniting
Hieroglyphics A writing system made up of a combination of pictures and sound symbols
Queen Hatshepsut Queen Hatshepsut was the only female to ever sit of the Egyptian throne. She restored new monuments, went on expeditions, brought Egypt new items, avoided wars, and she was the queen during the New Kingdom.
Lower Egypt Lower Egypt had a delta which made King Narmer want to move to Lower Egypt. Also, the desert protected them from outside invaders. The Nile River was a very important part of Egypt. It provided freshwater and the Med. Sea was crucial for trade.
Upper Egypt King Narmer ruled Upper Egypt. Upper Egypt did not have access to the delta which was important for farming because of the rich silt and because of the freshwater that was provided. Also, they did not have access to the Med. Sea.
The Old Kingdom (2600 B.C. - 2200 B.C.) King Narmer united Upper and Lower Egypt in the Old Kingdom. Boys were trained to be scribes and hieroglyphics were developed.
The Middle Kingdom (2055 B.C. - 1650 B.C.) The Capital city moved to Thebes. Art and architecture flourished (did very well) and pharaohs made 3 big improvements, adding acres of land, building ditches and dams, and building a canal between 2 rivers
The New Kingdom (1550 B.C. - 1070 B.C.) Queen Harhsepsut was the pharaoh during this time and there were 4 new rulers after she died. They're names were Thutmose III, Amenhotep IV, Akhenaton (King Tut’s son), and Ramses II. The religion went prom polytheism to monotheism and back to polytheism.
Monotheism A type of belief that worshiped one god
Moses Moses brought the Ten Commandments to the Israelites and he was the messenger for his god.
Abraham Abraham made a deal with God to settle in the region of Canaan and that began the new religion of Judaism. He was the founder of judaism.
Surplus Having an extra amount of something that is not needed yet
Specialization Having different jobs
Social Pyramid How people are classified
Pharaohs Rulers or kings
Judaism The first monotheism religion
Trade The exchange of goods or services
