Civics unit 1

What is Civics?

QuestionAnswer
Citizenship the position or status of being a citizen of a particular country.
Civic Responsibility tasks bestowed upon citizens by their government to ensure a balance between protection and allegiance
Civil Rights the rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality.
Discrimination the practice of unfairly treating a person or group of people differently from other people or groups of people
Due Process a requirement that legal matters be resolved according to established rules and principles, and that individuals be treated fairly
Eminent Domain the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation.
Equal Opportunity a state of fairness in which individuals are treated similarly
Equal Protection refers to the idea that a governmental body may not deny people equal protection of its governing laws
Individual Rights the rights needed by each individual to pursue their lives and goals without interference from other individuals or the government
Judicial Review procedure by which a court can review an administrative action by a public body.
Jury Duty a service is mandatory, and the person summoned for jury duty must attend
Living Constitution commonly used to describe the belief that the Constitution of the United States has relevant meaning beyond the original text and is an evolving document that changes over time.
Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is granted to a lawful permanent resident after meeting the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).
Precedents is something that precedes, or comes before
Rule of Law a principle under which all persons, institutions, and entities are accountable to laws
