| Homestead | a dwelling with its land and buildings, occupied by the owner as a home and exempted by a homestead law from seizure or sale for debt. |
| Panic (economic) | The growth in trade that followed the War of 1812 came to an abrupt halt. Unemployment mounted, banks failed, mortgages were foreclosed, and agricultural prices fell by half. Investment in western lands collapsed. |
| Platform | statement of values and beliefs which are a roadmap for where a party wants to be when elected. |
| Populism | a range of political stances that emphasize the idea of "the people" and often juxtapose this group against "the elite". |
