Reconstruction Era Period between 1865-1877 after the Civil War where attempts were made to transform the Confederate States and how to deal with the end of slavery and putting the nation “back together”
Ten Percent Plan Lincoln’s plan - southern states could be readmitted into the Union once 10% of its voters swore allegiance to the Union - Lincoln wanted to fix things quickly
Wade-Davis Bill Required that 50% of a state’s white males take a loyalty oath to be readmitted to the Union - also required to give African Americans the right to vote
13th Amendment Abolished slavery in all US states
14th Amendment Granted citizenship and equal civil rights and legal rights to African Americans
15th Amendment The right to vote could not be denied based on race, color, or previous conditions of servitude
Freedmen's Bureau Between 1865-1872 - established by Congress to provide aid to the newly freed African Americans in their transition from slavery to freedom
Black Codes Laws created by the former Confederate states that restricted the freedom of former slaves and were designed to assure white supremacy
Civil Rights Act of 1866 Declared all persons born in the US to be citizens without restrictions of race, color, or previous servitude
Reconstruction Acts (6 components)
Segregation Action of setting someone apart from other people - enforced separation of different racial groups
Jim Crow Laws State laws that legalized racial segregation
Ku Klux Klan A group formed following the Civil War. The group was against Civil Rights for African Americans and believed in white supremacy. The group used terror and violence to prevent African Americans from using their civil rights.
Plessy vs. Ferguson 1896 - US Supreme Court decision that upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation under the “separate but equal”
Sharecropping System where the landlord/planter allows a tenant to use the land in exchange for a share of the crop
Poll Tax Some citizens (African Americans) had to pay a fee to vote in a national election
