What was the Golden Age of Athens? a time when Athens grew rich from trade and from silver mined by slaves; important achievements made in the arts, philosophy and literature; democracy reached its high point
Why do you think Pericles called Athens “the school of all Greece”? they were making great advancements in literature, arts and philosophy, finding answers to questions people have about the world around them so they could share this information with the rest of Greece
How did the Greeks attempt to understand the world? philosophers believed that people could use the powers of the mind and reason to understand natural events. they answered their questions with observations and thinking.
What did Socrates mean when he said, “know thyself”? Knowing thyself means looking inside- think about what's important to you, think about what you're saying before you speak- what's your true message/question?
What characteristics did people in city states throughout Greece share? they spoke the same language, had the same customs
How did the growth of wealth through trade contribute to the spread of new ideas in Greece? when they trade with other people from other places, language is shared, ideas are shared, customs and values are shared and all this interaction contributes to new ideas in Greece. The traders bring these new customs, ideas, values, goods back to Greece
