Government/Civics

TermDefinition
Government A group of people who have the power to make and enforce laws for a country or area.
Constitution A system of basic rules and principles by which a government is organized.
Limited Government A government structure in which government actions are limited by law. This protects the rights of citizens.
Unlimited Government A government structure in which there are no effective limits on the government actions. This does not protect the citizens' rights.
City-state An independent state consisting of a city and its surrounding area.
Nation-state . A state consisting of an independent country that has its own government.
Empire A state containing several countries ruled by one government
Monarchy A government that is run by a king or queen that makes all of the decisions. A family member takes over after the monarch dies.
Dictatorship A government where one person is in charge and they like to have complete control. He/she will use force or violence if needed.
Democracy A government that is ruled by the people. People vote either themselves or they have representatives vote for them.
Republic A government where the people elect individuals to make the laws for them. The majority vote cannot take away certain inalienable rights.
Executive Branch Carries out the laws and is the Commander in Chief.
Legislative Branch Makes the laws and has to approve justices and cabinet members.
Judicial Branch Interprets the laws and makes sure everything is following the constitution.
Federal Government It is the highest government in the country. They pass laws that affect citizens of the country, make money, and regulate trade with other countries.
State Government Makes laws for the state, makes decisions about schools, govern marriage laws, and issues drivers license.
Local Government Provides roads, hospitals, and parks, maintains schools, provides libraries, and repairs local roads. Citizen A legal member of a country that has certain rights and responsibilities.
Citizen A legal member of a country that has certain rights and responsibilities.
