What are the New England colonies known for? Rocky soil, fishing, and strict Puritans.
What are the Middle colonies known for? Good soil, the “bread basket,” Religion freedom.
What were the Southern colonies known for? Great farming land, grapes, cotton indigo, and debtors. (No real religion.)
What was the House of Burgesses? The first legislative body of the colonies with elected representatives.
Who was John Locke? He was a man who had ideas about government responsibilities and citezen’s rights.
According to John Locke, what was the right of the citezens concerning government? If the government doesn’t protect their natural rights, they have right to find or start a new government.
What, according to John Locke, are all people born with? Natural Rights
Who was Mr. Zenger
Who was Mr. Zenger? A colonist who printed an article about the Royal Governor’s dishonesty but was found innocent after trail and being in jail for a bit.
Who was Phillis Wheatley? An enslaved African who was taught to read and write by Mr. and Mrs. Wheatley after being kidnapped at age 8.
What role did Phillis play in the road to the Revolution? She wrote poetry that compared the colonists hunger for freedom to slaves wanting freedom.
What happens when colonist are no longer “British?” They break away piece by piece and start tweaking the laws so that they are better for them.
What did the Spanish do in America? They built 100s of missions settlements to “convert” native to Catholicism.
Why did the Spanish move north to California, Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico? Because they feared the Russians and French that were creeping into their land.
In response to Russia and France, what did the Spanish do? They built presidios, or military forts.
What is the El Camino Real? A road from Mexico City to many mission settlements.
What was France’s commonest economic deal in America? Fur trading (Specifically beaver fur)
Name three fur trading posts. Quebec, Detroit, and in 1770, Chicago
To be a fur trapper, you had to have special qualities or beliefs, so there were illegal fur trappers. What were they called? Coreurs de Bois
Legal or otherwise, what did all the trappers and missionaries do? Acted friendly to the natives and some even learned their language!
When did Rene claim Mississippi River Valley? 1682
Who was Louisiana named after? Lois XIV
What does France do that is more permanent than trapping and missionaries? Builds forts to keep Spain out and TRIES to settle.
Where did France try to colonies and what really happened? They attempted to colonize the Mississippi mouth, but they ended up in Texas and only 36/300 survive.
By 1660, how many live in France? Only 3,000
Who established New Orleans? Jean Baptiste in 1718
