Biology Quiz

Cell membrane to Photosynthesis quiz

TermDefinition
Define diffusion and osmosis Diffusion is the passive movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. Osmosis is the term used to refer to the diffusion of water * passive means without any extra energy added
List the roles of the cell membrane --Separation the contents of the cell from the outside environment --Controlling which molecules enter and leave the cell --recognition of chemical signals
Distinguish between passive transport across membranes by simple diffusion and facilitated diffusion Simple diffusion involves the movement of small molecules directly through the cell membrane whereas in facilitated, large molecules move through protein channels embedded in the membrane
Explain the role of receptor molecules in membranes Receptor molecules in membranes are proteins that receive molecules that are sending a message to a cell. Chemical messengers include hormones, molecules that transmit a signal from one part of a multicellular organism to another and neurotransmitters
what are neurotransmitters? molecules that transmit a nerve impulse from one neuron (nerve cell) to another.
State the initial source of energy for all living things The sun is the initial source of energy for (most) living things.
State the organelle in plants and algae that is responsible for photosynthesis The organelle in plants and algae that is responsible for photosynthesis is chloroplast. The chloroplast contains the light-absorbing pigment chlorophyll
Construct the word equation/chem formula for photosynthesis Light energy + water + carbon dioxide -------> glucose + oxygen 6H2O + 6CO2 → 6H12O6+6O2 (“yields”)
State which reactants and products of photosynthesis are inorganic and which are organic Organic Inorganic Glucose (reactant) Light energy (product) Water (product) Carbon dioxide (product)
What is chlorophyll and what does it do? Chlorophyll is a pigment that absorbs red and green light and converts it to green, making plants look green to us.
What is the chloroplasts function? Converts light energy into chemical energy
What are receptor molecules and what do they do? Receptor molecules in membranes are proteins that receive molecules that are sending a message to a cell. Chemical messengers include hormones, molecules that transmit a signal from one part of a living organism to another.
How do receptor molecules bond with receptors and what do they bond to? A further example would be the lock and key principle. --receive signals from outside the cell, passing the signal to the inside Molecules that bind to receptor sites are known as ligands(i. e hormones and neurotransmitters).
