| Thoracentesis | the surgical puncture of the chest wall with a needle to obtain fluid from the pleural cavity |

| nasal cannula (NC) | an airway adjunct that consists of plastic tubing with two open prongs that are inserted into the patient's nostrils; provides low-flow oxygen when connected to an oxygen source. |
| rebreather mask | allows the exhaled breath to be partially reused, delivering up to 60% oxygen |
| Non-rebreather mask | allows higher levels of oxygen to be added to the air taken in by the patient |
| ventilator | a mechanical device for artificial ventilation of the lungs that is used to replace or supplement the patient's natural breathing function |
| incentive spirometry (IS) | medical procedure to encourage patients to breathe deeply by using a portable plastic device called a spirometer that gives visual feedback as the patient inhales forcefully |
