Northwest Ordinance | Was created to give an orderly process of allowing territories to become states. |
Federalist Papers | Written to persuade Americans to ratify the Constitution. |
Anti-Federalist | Believed government should give states MORE POWER than the federal/national government. |
Weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation | No power to tax or to enforce laws. No executive Branch |
Great Compromise | Solved the problem of representation between the Virginia Plan (based on population) and New Jersey Plan (equal representation) by creating a 2-house Congress. |
Three-Fifths Compromise | Agreement that each slave counted as three-fifths of a person in determining representation in the House for representation. Southern states now have more power in government. |
Amendment Process | step 1: amendment proposed by 2/3 vote of Congress. THEN, ratified by 3/4 of the 50 state Legislatures. |
Checks and Balances | Each branch of government has some power over the other 2 branches to make sure one branch doesn't get too powerful. |
Bill of Rights | Added to the Constitution to satisfy Anti-Federalists so they would approve of the new government. Major issue between Federalists and Anti-Federalists. |
5th Amendment | The Right to Remain Silent/Double Jeopardy, right to due process |
