1916 Rising

QuestionAnswer
Why had Redmonds popularity declined by the middle of 1915? War Casualties and no immediate prospect of Home Rule. Redmond didn't enter a coalition government and Carson did which weakened his hand.
Why did the IRB consider the planning of a rising to be a matter of urgency? England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity.
What role was played by Roger Casement in the IRB's plans? He travelled to Germany for arms and Irish POW's.
What did Pearse mean by Blood Sacrifice? The spilling if blood for Irish Independence.
Why did the IRB include James Connolly in their plans for a rebellion? They feared that he would start his own rebellion with the Irish Citizen Army and that all separatists would be rounded up.
What role was played by Patrick Pearse in the Gaelic Revival? He was editor of An Claidheamh Soluis
What were Pearse's views on the Irish Education system and how did he set about putting his own ideas on education into practice? He considered the education system a murder machine regarding Irish Culture.
What was Pearse's path to involvement in extreme nationalism? He was a founder member of the Irish Volunteers in 1913, he joined the IRB and was part of the Military Council that planned the Rising.
What role did Pearse play in the 1916 Easter Rising? He commanded the the Easter Rising and read the Proclaimation of the Republic
What was the attitude of Eoin Mac Neil towards the rising? He would support it only in the event of a serious chance of success and he wanted German soldiers to land on Irish soil,
What was the significance of the Castle Document? It made McNeil think that leading separatists were to be rounded up, so he called on the Irish Volunteers to resist arrest.
How did Mac Neil try to prevent a Rising? He published a note in the Irish Independent cancelling all manoeurings for the next day.
What happened in Dublin on the morning of the 24th April 1916? Irish Volunteers and Irish Citizen Army members took certain key buildings in Dublin and at noon the Proclaimation was read aloud and the flag was raised on top of the GPO.
