| william lloyd garrison | Abolitionist leader who called for emancipation of the slaves in his newspaper, “The Liberator” January 1, 1831 |
| david walker | A free African American himself who urged other African Americans to fight for their freedom |
| nat turner | A slave who led a violent slave rebellion, attacking 5 plantations and killing several people, known as the turner rebellion. (1831) |
| stephen douglass | Senator from Illinois who aided in passing the compromise of 1850 by submitting each part as a separate bill. |
| millard fillmore | 13th president, supported the compromise of 1850 |
| harriet tubman | One of the leaders of the underground railroad who made 19 trips to the south from the north and helped 300 slaves gain freedom |
| harriet beecher stowe | Abolitionist and author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin which showed northerners the horrors of slavery. |
| john brown | Abolitionist who killed five proslavery men in a raid, which triggered more violent actions throughout Kansas. As a result, 200 people were killed (bleeding kansas) |
