dred scott Part of the Dred Scott V. Stanford, which ruled that Americans of African descent, whether free or slave, were not American citizens and could not sue in federal court.
william lloyd garrison Abolitionist leader who called for emancipation of the slaves in his newspaper, “The Liberator” January 1, 1831
david walker A free African American himself who urged other African Americans to fight for their freedom
nat turner A slave who led a violent slave rebellion, attacking 5 plantations and killing several people, known as the turner rebellion. (1831)
stephen douglass Senator from Illinois who aided in passing the compromise of 1850 by submitting each part as a separate bill.
millard fillmore 13th president, supported the compromise of 1850
harriet tubman One of the leaders of the underground railroad who made 19 trips to the south from the north and helped 300 slaves gain freedom
harriet beecher stowe Abolitionist and author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin which showed northerners the horrors of slavery.
john brown Abolitionist who killed five proslavery men in a raid, which triggered more violent actions throughout Kansas. As a result, 200 people were killed (bleeding kansas)
franklin pierce 14th president, part of the democratic party
abraham lincoln President during the civil war, opposed slavery and popular sovereignty
jefferson davis President of the confederate States of America
robert e lee Confederate general who successfully defended the confederate capital and forced the Union army to retreat.
andrew johnson 17th president, took office after the assassination of Lincoln and supported states rights, remained loyal to the Union
