West Expansion Vocab

Vocabulary terms for Western Expansion Vocabulary in Social Studies.

TermDefinition
Federalist A person that supports a strong central government. Led by Alexander Hamilton, and they had a flexible interpretation of the constitution.
Democratic-Republicans A person that is against federalism, they were led by James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. This party was weaker in northern parts of America.
Manifest Destiny A belief that the Americans were allowed to expand their nation to the west.
Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson purchased a chunk of land from Napoleon that doubled the size of America.
Lewis and Clark Two leaders of an expedition to explore the North Western portion of America. This expedition took around three years to complete.
Sacagawea A guide that led the Lewis and Clark expedition. She was a translator and was known for her calm presence.
War of 1812 A war between the United States and England. I was caused by the British trying to stop trade between America and France. America won and boosted their national confidence.
Impressments The act of forcing someone to be at government service.
Embargo Imposing a trade barrier between two countries to stop commerce.
Tariff A tax on goods that are imported. Governments will usually be the ones that impose the taxes.
Nullify To invalidate. It is an idea that means that a state can override the federal government.
Monroe Doctrine A rule stating that America can't touch any European land, while Europeans can't touch American land either.
Indian Removal Act An act signed into law by Andrew Jackson. It states that the president can grant lands west of the Mississippi river for native tribes in the south.
Trail of Tears Part of the Indian removal policy. The Cherokee nation had to give up some land, and many negative effects resulted because of this.
Reservations An area of land that is reserved for a tribe under a treaty or agreement. Was enacted by executive order.
Nationalism A term that means you don't want a foreign oppressor, like the American Revolution.
Laissez-Faire French term meaning 'leave alone'. They say that natural regulation is the best kind of regulation.
Andrew Jackson A supporter of states' rights. He forced the Native Americans to relocate west of the Mississippi river.
John Calhoun A spokesman for the slave-plantation system. He was a South Carolina citizen and served as a U.S. secretary of war.
Henry Clay A man that was involved in a lot of American history. He almost did more to impact America than any other non-president.
