How was the settlement of Jamestown paid for, and how was this different from earlier attempts at colonization? The Virginia Company, a joint stock company of private citizens and merchants paid. Before this, the rulers of European countries usually paid for explorations & colonies in the New World.

What was the purpose of the House of Burgesses (legislature of Jamestown)? Jamestown colonists established this group to govern the colony. The colonists elected leaders to this group. This group had the job of making laws for the colony. Burgess means "citizen" or "city-dweller".

2 things John Rolfe to improve life in Jamestown 1) He married Pocahontas, which helped keep peace (for a while) between the Powhatan Indians & the colonists. 2 ) He learned how to cultivate tobacco from the Indians and taught the colonists. Tobacco became an important "cash crop" for Jamestown.
Why was tobacco so important to the Jamestown colonists? It was popular in Europe and it quickly became a "cash crop" for the settlers in Virginia. By selling it to Europeans, the Jamestown colonists were able to make the money they needed to purchase items they needed for the colony to be successful.
