limited government In political philosophy, limited government is the concept of a government limited in power. It is a key concept in the history of liberalism.
popular sovereignty Popular sovereignty is government based on consent of the people. The government's source of authority is the people, and its power is not legitimate if it disregards the will of the people.
federalism the federal principle or system of government.
check and balance checks and balances, principle of government under which separate branches are empowered to prevent actions by other branches and are induced to share power.
bill of rights Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.
federalists papers The Federalist Papers were written and published to urge New Yorkers to ratify the proposed United States Constitution, which was drafted in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787.
Anti Federalist Anti-Federalists, in early U.S. history, a loose political coalition of popular politicians, such as Patrick Henry, who unsuccessfully oppose.
great compromise - congress In the House of Representatives each state would be assigned a number of seats in proportion to its population.
separation of powers In the House of Representatives each state would be assigned a number of seats in proportion to its population.
Antifederalist The Anti Federalists were a diverse coalition of people who opposed ratification of the Constitution.
Federalists Federalists wanted a strong central government. They believed that a strong central government was necessary if the states were going to band together to form a nation.
