| illiterate | unable to read or write |
| Liberty Bonds | bonds sold by the government to raise money for the war |
| pacifist | person who objects to any war; believes war is evil |
| socialism | economic system in which individuals own personal property but the public owns the means of production, such as factories and natural resources |
| armistice | an agreement to stop fighting |
| epidemic | rapid spread of contagious disease |
| reparations | cash payment made by a defeated nation to a victorious nation to pay for losses suffered during a war |
| Treaty of Versailles | treaty signed by Germany and the Allies that place the blame on Germany for WWI |
| negotiate | to confer with others in order to reach an agreement |

| bureaucracy | a system of managing government through departments run by appointed officials |
