Political map | Shows political divisions such as national or state boundaries, cities, and capitols |
Historical map | Shows information about the past or where past events took place |
Distribution map | Shows how something is distributed or spread throughout an area |
Physical | Maps that show land and water features (Ex: lakes, rivers, mountains, deserts) Both relief and elevation maps are physical maps |
Relief | Shows shading to represent mountains, hilly areas, and flat areas. It shows changes in elevation |
Elevation | A map that shows the height above sea level |
Map key | Tells you what each symbol on a map stands for on a map. Uses this to find out what information is shown on the map |
Locator | Frames the area on a map to draw your attention to it |
Relative location | You look at one location and you determine where the second location is compared to the first |
Absolute location | Where the latitude and longitude lines intercept on the globe or map |
Culture | The set of beliefs, behaviors, and traits shared by the members of a group |
Customs/traditions | A way of life, passed down from generation/something that people practice regularly. It's particular to certain people |
Values | The ideals, or beliefs that guide the way people are and what's important to them |
Region | An area with common features that set it apart from other areas |
Archaeologist | People who dig in the Earth for places where people once lived so they could study the remains of the past |
Primary source | Firsthand pieces of evidence. Written or told by the people who saw or experienced an event. It's the original source |
Secondary source | Created after an event. Created by people who were not a part of the event. It's not the original source |
Oral history | Stories passed down from generation to generation |
Agriculture | The raising of crops and animals for human use |
Domestication | Training plants and animals for human use. Made their lives easier |
Specialization | The act of training for a particular job |
Permanent housing | A place where people could live in one spot and not have to move around (they were able to stay in one spot because of the start of farming) |
Surplus | An amount that is left over after a need has been met |
Trade | The exchange of something to get a new item |
Civilization | A culture that has developed systems of specialization, religion, learning, and government |
