dynasty a family or group that rules for several generations
papyrus a paper-like material made from reeds
cataract rapids along a river
delta a triangle-shaped area of land made from soil deposited by a river
elite people of wealth and power
Rosetta Stone a huge stone slab inscribed with hieroglyphics, Greek, and later a form of Egyptian that later allowed historians to understand Egyptian writing
sphinx an imaginary creature with a human head and the body of a lion
obelisk a tall, pointed, four-sided pillar
barter to exchange goods
treaty a written agreement by which two or more states agree to peaceful relations
mummy a specially treated body wrapped in cloth for preservation
polytheism a belief in many gods
