Primary | Firsthand pieces of evidence - they are firsthand accounts written or told by someone about his or her own experiences or observations (Provides direct, firsthand knowledge) |
Secondary | Created after an event - Created by people who were not part of the historical event (Provides interpretations, explanations, comments on information from primary sources, and they contain background information) |
Primary Examples | Letters, diaries, government records, spoken interviews, objects (tools and clothing), artwork |
Secondary Examples | Encyclopedias, textbooks, newspapers, magazines, biographies, other nonfiction books, and history books |
