Secondary & Primary Sources

Primary Firsthand pieces of evidence - they are firsthand accounts written or told by someone about his or her own experiences or observations (Provides direct, firsthand knowledge)
Secondary Created after an event - Created by people who were not part of the historical event (Provides interpretations, explanations, comments on information from primary sources, and they contain background information)
Primary Examples Letters, diaries, government records, spoken interviews, objects (tools and clothing), artwork
Secondary Examples Encyclopedias, textbooks, newspapers, magazines, biographies, other nonfiction books, and history books
