What is the name of the company that Henry Hudson sailed for? Dutch East India Company
Why did DEIC form? Because only royalty could afford stuff, but they didn't need it
Who discovered that a body of water around Canada was FULL of fish? John Cabot
What ship did Cabot sail in? The "Matthew"
Who was Giovanni da Verrazzano? What did he do? He was an person who found the Carolinas up to Canada and had New York Harbor named after him.
Who was Henry Hudson? An English sailor who sailed in DEIC's "1/2 Moon" and found Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, and inquired about the Northwest Passage.
What Native tribe lived in New York? The Manahata
How did Henry Hudson describe the Hudson River? "A great river of the mountains,"
What did the Delaware do? Stored up lots of food for winter
Where did Hudson try to go to find the Northwest Passage? Up in Canada in the Arctic Circle
When did Hudson's crew mutiny? 1611
How did Hudson's crew mutiny? They put Henry, his son, and seven loyal drew members in a tiny lifeboat in the Artic Circle, never to be seen again.
Where did France claim land? Along St. Lawrence River
The Huron word for Canada Kanata, meaning, "village"
What did France do in Canada? Traded fur
Who was Sam de Champlain? Founder of Quebec Trading Post along St. Lawrence River
What did Champlain do to Natives? Was friendly with them and learned their language
How did France try to convert the Huron? To Catholicism, peacefully.
What did the Huron ask France to do? Battle the Iroquois with them
What were the qualifications for owning land in Canada according to France? Can't actually own land, had to be Catholic to even go.
What was the bad thing about Canada for France? The land was bad for farming
Who was in Canada for France? Only 3,000 missionaries and fur traders.
What did Marquette and Jolliet discover? The Mississippi, and that it wasn't the Northwest Passage
Portage A land route from one body of water to the next
What did Europeans learn from their travels to America and Canada? That Canada and America are things, and about all of the animals and Natives and plants that live there.
Charter A piece of paper, signed by the king or queen, confirming that you could go and take land in the New Word.

Where does Raleigh claim the land for his settlement? North of Spanish Florida on Atlantic Coast
When did the first group settle in Roanoke? 1585
When did the second group settle in Roanoke? 1587
Who was John White? Leader of the 1587 Roanoke group
What did White do? Leave for supplies for 3 years and find that the group of colonists that were on the island were missing
What word was carved onto the tree in Roanoke settlement? "Croatoan"
Who asks for a charter from who? London merchants and King James
The London merchants are what to the Natives? Friendly
What group of Natives are the merchants friendly to? Powhatan
How is the Powhatan government like ours? Taxes, united under one chief, other leaders under the chief.
When is Jamestown settled? 1607
What do the group of London merchants call themselves? The Virginia Company
Who are the colonists and where do they settle? ONLY rich men and boys, and along the James River.
What was Jamestown's cash crop? Tobacco
What did Jamestown build along their settlement? A fort
Why did the colonists die in Jamestown? Because of lack of crop planting, they were on Indian hunting ground, Typhoid, nasty water, and mosquitoes
Why did the colonists not have enough food? Because they were out looking for gold and not planting.
Who whipped the surviving colonists into shape? John Smith
What did John Smith say? "He who does not work, does not eat."
When was the "Starving Time"? Winter of 1609-1610
Who was John Rolfe? He made tobacco the cash crop of Jamestown
What happened to the Speedwell? It sunk, leaving the passengers to get crammed on the Mayflower with the others.
What was unique about the Mayflower? It was a wine-delivering ship and was unlikely to cross the Atlantic and make it to America.
Puritans The Pilgrims or others trying to make pure of their religion
Why did the Pilgrims leave England? Because the were killed for being Christians and because they didn't want their children to grow up in another country
Where did the Pilgrims end up in America? Not Jamestown, but Boston area
What was the Mayflower Compact? The first from of self-government, an agreement written on the Mayflower

Massasoit A sachem who knew that there were "strange ships" coming and formed a peace treaty with the Pilgrims
Samoset A sachem who knew English and even greeted the colonists, "Hello, Englishmen!"
Squanto An Indian who spoke English and helped the Pilgrims trap game and grow plants
What happens to the Pilgrims in the first winter? Almost 1/2 die: Mothers sleep on boat on top of kids to keep warm
