El Dorado | a make-believe city abounding in gold, the conquistadors believed to exist |
small pox | A disease that leaves blisters and scars and often kills those infected. Native Americans had no immunity to this disease and millions of them died from it |
Treaty of Tordesillas | When Pope Julius II agreed to divide the unknown world in half, and give half to Spain and half to Portugal` |
inflation | When there is a lot of money made, so the value of the money goes down. |
Protestant Reformation | When European Christianity split, and there was violence all over Europe between Catholic and Protestants in the 16th century |
Queen Isabella and Ferdinand | the firsts queen and king of Spain, who commissioned Columbus to sail west |
Columbian Exchange | the movement of plants, animals, and humans from the old world to the new world |
Queen Elizabeth | the Queen of England in the 16th century, who granted the first colonial charter for an English colony in north america |
Roanoke | a failed colony started by Sir Walter Raleigh |
Jamestown | a successful colony in Virginia, started by John smith |
Massachusetts | A successful colony, started by Pilgrims, who were a religious group the English Monarchs did not like. |
