Study Cards Of The Government

QuestionAnswer
First government was a 7 man council revealed when men arrived at Jamestown. What did this government lack? This government lacked strong leadership and had a lot of in-fighting. It took John Smith being elected president of the council to save the colony.
What did the Virginia Company ask for? The Virginia company asked for a new charter from the king that gave sole leadership to a single man a governor and gave him the ability to declare and use martial law (institute and enforce military laws with harsh punishment for those who didn't obey).
These new laws were harsh but considered necessary to help the colony survive. But what did the Virginia Colony soon realize? The Virginia Company soon realized it wasn't going to attract new settlers to go to Virginia.
What did the Virginia Company issue? The Virginia Company issued new orders to the governor called the Great Charter that instructed him to create laws that were less harsh to attract new colonists and investors.
What were the two new councils that the Great Charter created? A Council of State (members selected by the Virginia Company) and a General Assembly (members were the Council of State and two burgesses or representatives selected by certain people from their settlements).
What happened while the Governor could still veto? While the Governor could still veto (not accept) any laws the General Assembly created, this first representative government in 1619 still reduced the power of the governor.
In 1624, why was King James displeased? In 1624, King James was displeased with how the Virginia Company had run the colony and took Virginia over as a royal colony and he chose the new governor.
Why did the General Assembly meet less frequently? The General Assembly met less frequently under the royal government and only met with the Governor and Council of State.
In 1643, however, what did Governor Berkley allow? In 1643, however, what did Governor Berkley allowed the Burgesses to meet as a separate house, and this helped the new House of Burgesses to balance royal power.
What is the two-house system of government that came from the General Assembly? The two-house system of government that came from the General Assembly served as a basis other colonial governments and the democratic government of the future United States of America.
