| First government was a 7 man council revealed when men arrived at Jamestown. What did this government lack? | This government lacked strong leadership and had a lot of in-fighting. It took John Smith being elected president of the council to save the colony. |
| What did the Virginia Company ask for? | The Virginia company asked for a new charter from the king that gave sole leadership to a single man a governor and gave him the ability to declare and use martial law (institute and enforce military laws with harsh punishment for those who didn't obey). |
| These new laws were harsh but considered necessary to help the colony survive. But what did the Virginia Colony soon realize? | The Virginia Company soon realized it wasn't going to attract new settlers to go to Virginia. |
| What did the Virginia Company issue? | The Virginia Company issued new orders to the governor called the Great Charter that instructed him to create laws that were less harsh to attract new colonists and investors. |
