1. What happened in 1584? | Walter Raleigh pays for voyage from England to America to investigate whether it would be possible to set up a colony. |
2. What happened in 1584? | The officers meet the brother of the chieftain of Roanoke Island. |
3. What happened in 1584? | The company returns to England. They take back several items, including skins and pearls. They also take back two Amerindians called Manteo and Wanchese. This generates positive interest and support for another expedition. |
1. What happened in 1585? | Five ships carrying the first settlers sail from England. The expedition is led by Sir Richard Grenville. |
2. What happened in 1585? | A colony is established on Roanoke Island. |

1. What happened in 1586? | The English privateer Sir Francis Drake is spotted and signaled by the colonists. He offers to bring them back to England and they accept due to lack of supplies and hostile natives. |
2. What happened in 1586? | When Grenville returns with the supplies, he find everyone gone and leaves behind 15 men with supplies to await for the missing colonists (who have left for England with Drake). |
1. What happened in 1587? | Sir Walter Raleigh organizes another expedition this time including women and children. |
2. What happened in 1587? | The ships bringing the colonists were meant to pick up the 15 men Grenville left behind and bring the colonists further north, but they refuse and leave the colonists on Roanoke. |
3. What happened in 1587? | Friendly Croatans tell the new colonists that the Roanoke natives killed the 15 men. In revenge they attack a Roanoke village but accidently kill friendly Croatans instead. |
4. What happened in 1587? | John White, the colony's governor, leaves for England for supplies but is delayed for 3 years. |
1. What happened in 1590? | When John White returns to Roanoke, he finds everyone gone with the only clues being the carvings CRO and CROATOAN left behind. It is believed the colonists probably went to live with various native groups but no one knows for sure. |
