Study Cards Of Establishment Notes

QuestionAnswer
About 20 years after Roanoke, what happened? Another attempt to colonize North America was made by England.
This time it was a joint-stock company called the Virginia Company that decided to start the colony. What is a joint-stock company? A joint-stock company is a group of men who combine their money to invest it in some way, hoping to earn more than they contribute.
They received a charter to start a colony from King James the first. What were the colony's goals? Their goals were to find gold, find a water passage to Asia, and convert natives to Christianity.
The Virginia company got approximately 100 men to begin the colony. They were made up of some skilled craftsmen, laborers and many gentlemen. They set off for the New World in how many ships? They set off for the New World in 3 ships.
What were the main characteristics the settlers were looking for in a colonial site? A place they could anchor their ships nearby, a place that was defensible and had no natives living on it.
What did the colonists find that met all these characteristics? They found a peninsula slightly up the James River.
Upon the arrival they set up a council as instructed by the Virginia Company, what did they start to do? They started building a fort and began looking for gold.
Why did it soon become apparent that the site they selected was not so good? It was swampy so very poor for growing crops, the swamp had many mosquitoes which spread diseases, and it was close to the ocean so the salt water was in their drinking water making them sick.
While no natives lived on the peninsula, they still considered it their hunting grounds so they were not very friendly to the settlers although they did trade with them at first. What also happened? There were also frequent attacks.
After many men died, John Smith took over, and forced colonists to work on getting food not gold. He also helped relationships with the natives (The Powhatan). What happened after he was saved by their princess Pocahontas? John Smith was adopted into the tribe and trade became more frequent and attacks happened less often.
Even though more settlers were arriving, the village had burned down, and rats ate many of their supplies while a route to the colony. Despite these setbacks, what did John Smith do? John Smith kept the colony going.
John Smith had to leave for England after being injured and never returned. The Powhatan took this opportunity to starve the colonists. What did The Powhatan tribe do? They surrounded the village, killed all the game around it, and killed anyone who tried to leave.
This was "The Starving Time". Forced to eat dogs, rats, mice and even the dead, only 60 of the 500 settlers were left when a new ship came. What did the colonists do? The colonists decided to leave on a ship back for England.
