Study Cards Of A New Beginning

QuestionAnswer
When a new ship arrived at Jamestown after the starving time, what did the few remaining colonists decide to do? They decided to abandon the settlement and return to England.
As they sailed away, a ship carrying the new governor, Lord De la War met them. Using his new charter from the king that gave him more military power, what did he do? He ordered the fleeing settlers to return to Jamestown.
What did De la War make the colonists do? He made the colonists get to work and made them start aggressively attacking the surrounding Native Americans.
What happened with this aggressive approach to the colony's interactions with the natives? It continued after De la War left after he got ill.
What happened after Jamestown was able to produce a good harvest of corn? They began creating new settlements outside of Jamestown itself.
What happened when John Rolfe developed a new sweet tobacco? It became popular in England.
What happened to this new tobacco? It became Jamestown's way to make a profit.
Why did everyone start growing tobacco? They were forced by the governor to grow some food crops so the colony could eat.
Why did John Rolfe decide to marry Pocahontas (with the governor and Chief Powhatan's permission)? Because the Jamestown settlers had previously captured her and held hostage.
During the time they were married, the colony had the most stable relationship with the natives. What was this time in history called? This time was called The Peace of Pocahontas.
When Rolfe and Pocahontas had a child, and they travelled to England to help promote the Virginia Colony and tobacco sales, what happened to Pocahontas? She died on the way back home.
When Chief Powhatan died a couple of years later, what did is brother do? He became chief and decided to kill off all the colonists.
What did the new chief try to do to lull the colonists into a false sense of security? He did it by maintaining peace for four years!
What did the natives do on one trading expedition to the colony? They attacked and killed about 350 colonists including John Rolfe.
This massacre prompted the Jamestown settlers to do what? It prompted them to start attacking Native Americans, burning their crops and villages, killing many and driving most of them from Virginia.
