| Cartouche | An oval shape inside which a pharaoh's name was inscribed in hieroglyphics. These are often seen on tomb walls. |
| delta | triangular area of marshland formed by deposits of silt at the mouth of some rivers |
| Dynasty | A series of rulers from the same family |
| Hieroglyphics | An ancient Egyptian writing system in which pictures were used to represent ideas and sounds |
| linen | a fabric made from flax; noted for its strength and coolness |
| lush | Marked by richness of growth( fertile, green), especially of vegetation. |
| obelisk | A tall, four-sided pillar that is pointed on top |
| Papyrus | A reed that grows along the banks of the Nile River in Egypt. From it was produced a coarse, paper-like writing medium used by the Egyptians and many other peoples in the ancient Mediterranean and Middle East. |
| Pharaoh | A king of ancient Egypt, considered a god as well as a political and military leader. |
| Rosetta Stone | a huge stone slab inscribed with hieroglyphics, Greek, and a later form of Egyptian that allowed historians to understand Egyptian writing. |

| Scarab | a beetle shaped ornament. The beetle was sacred to the Egyptians. It represented rebirth. |
| Mummification | A process of embalming and drying corpses to prevent them from decaying |
| Shadoof | a bucket attached to a long pole, used to move water for irrigation |
| Embalming | process developed by the ancient Egyptians of preserving a person's body after death |
| Anatomy | the study of the structure of the body |
| preservation | the act or process of saving |
| Cataracts | rapids along a river, caused by large rocks, such as those along the Nile in Egypt |

| archaeologist | a scientist who learns about ancient people by studying the things they left behind |
| artifact | An object made by human beings; often refers to a primitive tool or other relic from an earlier period |
