Global History (early civilizations)

TermDefinition
prehistory a time period before there were records of anything written
artifacts objects such as tools, weapons, or jewelry that were made by humans
culture a way of life that is shown by ideas, beliefs, tools, clothing, etc.
paleolithic age a prehistoric period called the Old Stone Age that lasted from 2.5 million B.C. to 8,000 B.C.
neolithic age a prehistoric period called the New Stone Age that lasted from 8,000 B.C. to 3,000 B.C. People learned to make pottery, grow crops, raise animals, etc.
nomads a person who doesn't have a permanent home & travels from one place to another looking for food and water.
hunters and gatherers a nomadic group member whose source of food comes from hunting animals and gathering plant & berries.
neolithic revolution there was a change from food-gathering to food-producing. This made a major impact in human life.
domestication animal taming for human benefit
cuneiform system of writing with symbols, created by Sumerians around 3,000 B.C.
ziggurat a pyramid-shaped structure that formed part of the Sumerian temple.
fertile crescent an arc of rich farmland in southwest Asia between the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea.
hammurabis code laws, judgements, and existing rules that were collected by Hammurabi and were copied and pasted/hung all over his empire.
theocracy a government controlled by "divine leaders" or religious leaders.
monsoons a wind that shifts direction at certain times of the year.
himalayas a wide mountain range in Asia
khyber pass a mountain pass that connects Afghanistan and Pakistan.
hindu kush a mountain range west of the Himalayas in central and South Asia.
mohenjo-daro & harrapo two civilizations that were part of the Indus River Civilization.
loess a fertile deposit of wind blown soil (silt)
mandate of heaven in Chinese history, the divine approval thought to be the basis of royal authority.
dynastic cycle the historical pattern of the rise, decline, and replacement of dynasties.
oracle bones one of the animal bones or tortoise shells used by ancient Chinese priests to communicate with the g-ds.
