Gitlow v. New York 1925-The Supreme Court decision holding that freedoms of the press and speech are "fundamental personal rights and liberties protected by the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment from impairment by the states" as well as the federal government
Engel v. Vitale 1962- The Supreme Court decision holding state officials violated the First Amendment when they wrote a prayer to be recited in a New York school.
Near v. Minnesota 1931- The Supreme Court decision holding that the First Amendment protects news papers from prior restraint
Dred Scott v. Sanford 1896-declared that all blacks, slaves as well as free, were not and could never become citizens of the United States. The court also declared the 1820 Missouri Compromise unconstitutional, thus permitting slavery in all of the country's territories.
Plessy v. Freguson 1896- The Supreme Court decision that provided a constitutional justification for segregation by ruling that a Louisiana law requiring "equal but separate accommodations for the white and colored races" was not unconstitutional.
Brown v. Board 1954- The Supreme Court decision holding that school segregation in Topeka Kansas was inherently unconstitutional because it violated the Fourteenth Amendment's guarantee of equal protection. This case marked the end of legal segregation in the US.
Regents of the University California v. Bakke 1974- It bared quota systems in college admissions but affirmed the constitutionality of affirmative action programs.
Buckley v. Valeo 1976- Upheld a fed law setting limits on campaign donations, but ruled that spending money to influence elections is constitutionally protected speech, it struck down portions of the law. Candidates can give unlimited money to their own campaigns.
Bush v. Gore 2000-The decision allowed Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris's previous certification of George W. Bush as the winner of Florida's electoral votes to stand.
Marbury v. Madison 1803-Supreme Court case in which Chief Justice Marshall and associates first assert the right of the SC to determine the meaning of the Constitution. It established the court's power of judicial review over acts of congress, ex Judiciary Act of 1789
