Unit 2 AP Biology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Phospholipid structure | amphipathic- have a hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions |
| Phospholipid bilayer structure | hydrophobic tail and hydrophilic head |
| hydrophobic reactions are weaker than | covalent bonds |
| why do unsaturated hydrocarbon tails work better than saturated hydrocarbon tails in lower temperatures | unsaturated substances have double bonds in their tails which allow them to not pack in as tightly allowing substances to pass through the membrane |
| cholesterol function in membranes | (also a steroid) at high temperatures or body heat, they restrain the phospholipid movement and makes the membrane less fluid, also hinders close packing of phospholipids |
| transmembrane protein | a type of intergral protein that spans the entirety of the cell membrane, they undergo changes to move a substance through the membrane, are usually hydrophobic, precipitate in water |
| the role of membrane carbohydrates in cell-cell recognition | membrane carbohydrates are normally short with branched chains of fewer than 15 sugar units, some covalently bond to lipids making glycolipids, most bond to proteins called glycoproteins, they are like markers that distinguish one cell from another |
| example of carbohydrate cell-cell recognition | type A, AB, B, and O blood types reflect variation in the carbohydrate part of glycoproteins on the surface of red blood cells |
