What does Virginia mean? Queen Elizabeth I was the one who granted to Sir Walter Raleigh the charter for this English colony in the New World, and so they named it after her. Because she never married, she was known as the Virgin Queen, hence Virginia.
What does New York mean? As with the other "new" states, this is in honor of York--but not just the English place, more particularly the English personage, James Stuart, Duke of York and future king. The word "York" means city in Latin.
What does Massachusetts mean? Native American word. Massachusetts is taken directly from the name of a tribe native to the area, whose name means "near the great hill," referring to the Blue Hills southwest of Boston.
What does Maryland mean? Maryland was named for the wife of King Charles I, who signed its charter--Queen Henrietta Maria
What does Rhode Island mean? That the Dutch explorer Adrian Brock called it Roodt Eylandt ("red island") because of the red clay lining the shores, a name which was later anglicize
What does Connecticut mean? The colony of Connecticut was named from the Connecticut River. The river, in turn, is from the Mohegan people's Algonquin word quinnitukqut, which means "long river place"or "beside the long tidal river."
What does New Hampshire mean? New Hampshire was named for old Hampshire, in England.
What does Delaware mean? The river, bay, and state are all named for the first governor of Virginia, Sir Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr. His title is likely from the French de la werre, which means "warrior"
What does North Carolina mean? Carolina is derived from Charles, or its Latin form, Carolus. What I find kinda funny is that Charles II so named it after his father, Charles I.
What does South Carolina mean? Carolina is derived from Charles, or its Latin form, Carolus. What I find kinda funny is that Charles II so named it after his father, Charles I.
What does New Jersey mean? This one because one of its founders, Sir George Carteret, had served as Jersey's Lieutenant Governor for several years. Island ruled by England
What does Pennsylvania mean? Named after William Penn. Sylva means "woods" and then they tacked on nia, which means "land." So the name actually means "Penn's woodlands."
What does Georgia mean? Named after George the first who gave the charter of the colony.
Proprietary The King granted land to people who then formed Proprietary (Private) Colonies. Group or Person.
Royal Colonies The Royal Colonies were ruled directly by the English monarchy.
Charter The Charter Colonies were generally self-governed, and their charters were granted to the colonists.
Reasons to move to New World 1# Politcal European Monarchs wanted to develop colonies in the New World as a new source of wealth. They granted individuals and companies the rights to establish colonies.
Reasons to move to New World 2# Economic Gold - Many came in search of these precious metals. Land – Land was not available to the average farmer in Europe, but land was in abundance in North America.
Reasons to move to New World 3# Social Europe was not always a paradise for the average European, they faced poverty, political turmoil, famine, and disease. Thousands of people migrated between 1629-1640 to escape these conditions.
Reasons to move to New World 4# Religious Religious Some groups came to North America to escape religious persecution. Pilgrims, Puritans, Quakers, and Catholics all fled Europe to establish communities where they could worship freely.
