Map Skills Vocab

TermDefinition
Hemispheres Half of the earth, usually as divided into northern and southern halves by the equator, or into western and eastern halves by an imaginary line passing through the poles.
Prime Meridian The starting point for measuring longitude.
Equator An imaginary line circles the globe halfway between the North and South poles.
Compass Rose A symbol on a map that shows directions.
Cardinal Directions One of the four main compass points north, south, east, and west.
Intermediate Directions A direction, such as northwest, that is between two cardinal directions.
Map Scale The relationship between distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground.
Political Map A map that shows information such as borders, capitals, and important cities.
Symbol A thing that stands for or represents something else.
Map Key The box list showing what the symbols on the map represent.
Physical Map A map that shows geographic features of a place, such as mountains, valleys, and bodies of water.
Elevation The distance above or below sea level.
Grid Used to locate places.
Degrees A unit of measure.
Longitude Lines that measure the distances east and west of the prime meridian.
Latitude Lines that measure the distance north and south of the equator.
