Chapter One

TermDefinition
Archaeologist Archaeologists are people who dig up items from the past.
Historian A historian is a person who studies and writes about the past.
Geographer A geographer is someone who makes and writes maps.
B.C. B.C.E. B.C. is Before Christ and B.C.E. is Before Common Era.
A.D. C.E. A.D. means in the year of the Lord and C.E. means Common Era.
Periods/Eras Periods and eras are blocks of time in history.
Calendar Calendars are dating systems used to measure time.
Decades A decade is a period of ten years.
Primary Source Primary Sources are pieces of evidence from people who saw or experienced an event.
Secondary Source Secondary Sources are pieces of evidence from people who didn't see or weren't involved with an event.
Century A century is a period of a hundred years.
Prehistory Prehistory is the time before people could write.
Ancient History Ancient History is the time after Prehistory and ends in 500 A.D.
Middle Ages The middle ages were the thousand years after Ancient History.
Modern Age The Modern Age is all time after 1500 A.D.
Circa Circa means about.
Chronology Chronology is the order of events in which they happened.
Timeline A timeline is a diagram that shows the order of events within a period of time.
Analyze Analyze means examine.
Credibility Credibility is the truthfulness of a source.
Point of View Point of view means the general attitude about people and life.
Interpret Interpret means to explain something.
Effect Effect is what happens because of a "cause".
Cause A cause is an action that leads to another event.
Cause and Effect Chain A cause and effect chain is the link between the cause and the effect.
